Before I start discussing how to block content on the internet it is necessary to discuss why contents on the internet are blocked.

Let me ask one question have you ever faced this??

If I am not wrong then yes. You must have ever this once in your life. This is called Internet Censorship. Internet Censorship is defined as control or restriction on access to some websites on the internet or some particular web page.

Internet Censorship may be due to following reasons….

1- Security Reason

Any information or material on the internet that could pose danger to a country or some organisation is blocked.

2- Time And Resource

Many companies and organisations block access to certain websites like Facebook or YouTube or some other entertainment websites because they believe that there employs will waste time and resources instead of working.

3- Bandwidth

Many companies want their users to use limited data. As soon as the users cross the threshold they get disconnected.

4- Moral Values

Many countries, companies and organisation block access to certain websites which are against their moral values. Websites having violent, abusive, illegal or pornographic content are possibly blocked.

5- Legal Reasons

Websites which have illegal content like pirated, copyrighted material are blocked. Many companies block access to certain web pages on their websites which might pose a serious threat to their security if leaked, are blocked.

So, whenever you try to access any blocked websites it will give you an error message ”Access Denied” saying that this website is blocked by the respective country, organisation or company.

Content Which Is Generally Blocked On The Internet Are:-

  • Video Streaming or Video Downloading Websites.
  • Torrent Websites.
  • Online Gaming Websites
  • Movies, Games Downloading Websites
  • Certain Blogs and News Websites.

How to block content on the Internet.

There are various techniques which are used by companies or organisation to block content on the internet. In this section, we will discuss them.

1- Blocking Domain Name

Whenever you type the name of any website your web browser performs a DNS Lookup i.e it converts the domain name into its corresponding IP Address for connecting to the requested website. Whenever a website has to be blocked they block the DNS Lookup for that server. For example, if a company has blocked DNS Lookup for Facebook or YouTube so everytime you type Facebook or YouTube in your web browser it will give you error messages.

2- Blocking IP Address

Instead of blocking DNS Lookup, companies directly blocks the IP Address.

3- URL Filtering

In this technique, the entire URL is scanned for certain blocked keywords or domain name. Whenever any blocked keyword or domain name is found in the URL the user gets disconnected.

4- Proxy Monitoring Or Proxy Filtering

In such technique connection between the user and the server is monitored using a proxy server. The proxy server can be configured to block access to certain websites. As soon as any blocked website is encountered the user gets redirected.

5- Limits

Certain companies do not block any website and their user can access any website they want to access but for a limited time or limited bandwidth as soon as they cross the threshold the connection gets stopped or redirected. This type of blocking technique is generally used by schools and colleges.

6- Packet Filtering

This technique is quite similar to URL Filtering but instead of scanning the whole URL certain keywords are monitored. As soon as any blocked keyword is found the user gets disconnected.

7- Port Blocking

Certain websites open certain ports on your system for sending or receiving data. A website might use more than one port, different ports for different purpose such as one port for receiving data, one for sending data, one port so that its user can download data from the website. A network administrator might block certain ports but not the whole website. For example if the administrator does not want it, users, to download anything, in that case, he will only block the downloading port.

8- Filtered Access

Many companies allow their users to access few websites.

I hope now you have understood what internet censorship is and what are the various techniques that are used to block content on the Internet.
